Stories of Tanggramer 10.0: Love is more about giving than taking

By Tanggram

As the name implies, Stories of Tanggramer is our special edition to tell stories of Tanggram’s customers and merchants all across Australia after they joined Tanggram.

During the pandemic, especially locking downs, Tanggram has dedicated itself to building a bridge connecting merchants and our users. The delivery of a service through Tanggram can only provide merchants with income, but we want to support our merchants to speak out their stories and share their experiences, communication is the bridge of love.

Today the story is about Boon, the owner of the Thai restaurant Doddee on Little Collins Street.

Street

Born in Malaysia and raised in Australia, Boon has the cheerfulness and confidence as an Australian. He enjoys interacting with others and resents the idea of a static lifestyle.

He originally worked as a programmer in an IT company in Brisbane before opening Dodee in Melbourne. The day-to-day work of a programmer was too boring for him, and he was tired of talking to the computer all the time.

In 2016 he started looking for business opportunities with his wife, browsing different restaurant websites and found the news that Dodee Paidong, the brand’s Sydney head office, was seeking a partner. This provided great inspiration for the Boons, who were planning a lifestyle change.

In between interviews, Boon laughs and tells us, “I thought it would be nice to find a job where I could interact with people because it would make me happy. So I got the idea of opening a restaurant, and if you were to ask me if I wanted to go back to working in IT again, then I think my answer would be a resounding no, never again. Because I love my life now.”

Before the pandemic, this place was really bustling with people. On weekends Dodee’s also hosted a Thai cover band to perform local songs.

Dodee’s was always the most beautiful sight in the alley, the customers always queuing up the stairs to the alleyway.

Boon felt that the most difficult thing for him during the epidemic was that he had never seen such an empty and quiet restaurant before.

“I really miss the noisy, busy restaurant and the old, familiar customers.”

But love hasn’t stopped here.

Although the pandemic has brought him financial losses, it has made him more understanding of others and willing to give back to the people who love his restaurant with acts of charity.

During the worst time of the epidemic in Melbourne, he and his team distributed 250 free meals to bring warmth to the people who were hit by the epidemic during the winter.

When asked how much it cost to distribute the free meals, he humbly told us, “Luckily it didn’t cost much, and we were lucky enough to get some support from our headquarters in Sydney this time. I’ve always believed in the philosophy that no matter what you do, love is more about giving than taking from others.”
